Cycling BC and the Burnaby Velodrome Club Offer Free Youth Cycling Program

This autumn, Cycling BC, in partnership with the Burnaby Velodrome Club, will continue to pilot the HopOn BVC Shuttle Program to introduce youth from the local communities to the excitement of track cycling at the Burnaby Velodrome. The program provides bikes, helmets, and coaching from highly qualified NCCP-certified instructors during the sessions. This 3-week after-school program is entirely free for participants, thanks to the Government of Canada’s Community Sport for All Initiative (CSAI).

The HopOn Burnaby Velodrome Shuttle program is a unique opportunity for bike riders to learn the art of pedalling a fixed-gear bike, navigate the Burnaby Velodrome’s steeply banked corners, and build the speed required to ride along the upper blue line of the track. Each session of the program will focus on a fundamental skill to build the skills and confidence of the rider so they can safely and skillfully ride the track.

The program will run once a week and the shuttle will pick up students from local participating schools and take them to the Burnaby Velodrome for the riding sessions. Participants who do not require shuttle transportation to the Velodrome can still participate in the program and are asked to arrive at the Velodrome to meet up with the group prior to the start of the session.

The September 2023 cohort of the HopOn BVC Velodrome Shuttle is open to the public, with a maximum of 14 participants per session, and additional cohorts will begin on October 5, November 2, and November 30, offering even more opportunities for local youth to discover the joy of cycling.
