SUMMARY:HopOn BVC Velodrome Shuttle (December-East Van)
DESCRIPTION:HopOn BVC Velodrome Shuttle (December – East Vancouver) \nThis autumn\, Cycling BC and the Burnaby Velodrome Club are providing free coaching\, equipment\, and transportation to East Vancouver youth to help introduce students to the thrill of Velodrome cycling. \nThis 3-week after-school program is funded by Sport Canada CSIA grants to help provide innovative and discounted cycling programs for new communities\, and as a result\, our 2023 programs are 100% FREE. \nThe program is for confident bike riders only (Level 4 and beyond) who wish to learn to pedal a fixed-gear bike\, safely navigate the banked turns\, and build enough strength to ride along the blue line and the rail. This skills-focused session provided rental bikes\, helmets\, and NCCP Club-certified instructors. \nStudents also work together to learn to ride the stationary rollers and understand group riding etiquette on the velodrome\, building spatial awareness and consideration for fellow participants. As a result of this 3-week program\, students may be invited to attend other youth sessions\, including Wednesday and Friday fitness-focused sessions. \nThis December 2023 cohort is open to the youth in the East Vancouver area. \nOur shuttle will be available to pick up participants from Templeton Secondary at 3:20 p.m. and transport the participants to the velodrome to be prepared for the 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. session on the track. Lunch will be provided to the children upon our arrival at the facility. \nParents pick up children at the velodrome between 6:05 p.m. – and 6:15 p.m.\, or children over 12 years old with adult permission can self-checkout. Please note the velodrome is a 25-minute drive or 45-minute bus ride from East Vancouver. Parents are welcome to visit earlier and watch the session from the spectator area. \nEach session includes a fundamental velodrome skill that helps the riders prepare to ride the velodrome safely and skillfully. Our instructor team abides by Cycling BC’s youth club instructor standards and carries background screenings\, ethics training\, and NCCP certification in velodrome cycling. In addition\, participants become Cycling BC HopOn Members through registration and receive liability and sports accident coverage during HopOn activities for the remainder of the calendar year. \nIf your child does NOT require transportation\, or your school is outside the shuttle operating range\, please register using our system to ensure FREE entry\, and bring your child to the Burnaby Velodrome by 4:15 p.m. \nProgram Dates: \n\nNovember 30 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm (cancelled due to Volleyball Tournament)\nDecember 7   @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nDecember 14 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm\n\nAdditional 3-week cohorts begin on September 14\, October 5\, and November 2\, respectively (learn more here). Children can also attend a Thursday “Youth Beginner/Intermediate” velodrome session throughout the entire year by registering on the BVC’s system.  \nHow do I register my child? \n\nCOMPLETE our online forms using this discount code: HopOn-BVC-2023-25\n\nParticipants should be comfortable with ALL the following: \n\nLift the front wheel\nUse gears and pedal up a steep hill\nAble to exercise intensely for 3-5 minutes\n\nPlease carefully read Cycling BC Skill Levels before registering. \nTo prepare\, please bring the following: \n\nSMILES!\nAthletic Wear (what you would wear for gym class)\nWater bottle\nHealthy Snacks … we also provide sandwiches upon arrival at the facility\n\nParticipants receive a welcome email 7-14 days before the program starts. DESCRIPTION:A three-day event for grade 4+\, the HopOn in-school program helps students learn basic cycling skills and safety awareness during gym class. Each class receives three 45-60-minute training sessions over three days\, with the goal of all children achieving skill level 3. In addition\, we provide bicycles and helmets for children between 4′ and 5’5″ feet tall at no additional charge. \nOur curriculum matches the BC Ministry of Education’s Prescribed Learning Outcomes and targets students in grades 4 to 6. We teach on all-weather fields\, grass fields\, and paved areas. The program helps students who already know how to pedal on their own. However\, those still learning will work with their teacher\, with support from our staff\, to fast-track their skills and confidence and join the rest of their class when they’re ready. \nTo prepare\, please complete the following:\n\nRegister Online (due one week prior)\nRead our parent letter\nReview our frequently asked questions\n\nAfterward\, here are some ways to continue cycling:\n\nTry additional programs nearby\nShare your thoughts (2-minute survey)\nGet Involved
